Background checks

Checked before the first booking, on both sides of the door.

Every caregiver completes a basic background check before the first booking. The profile shows the date it was completed.

Every adult in your home overnight completes one too.

A mother holds her newborn against her shoulder, turned away from the camera.

What the check includes

Five searches, the same for every caregiver.

The standard check the large care sites run, completed before the first booking and repeated every year.

  • A Social Security number trace.

  • A national criminal database search.

  • County criminal records.

  • Federal criminal records.

  • The national sex offender registry.

The AfterDoula app

We see the gap. We’re solving it.

Pick a caregiver by the background check date, the CPR certification, and a meet before you book.

Both sides of the door

Every adult in your home overnight.

  1. When you request a booking, you list every adult who will be in the home.

  2. Each one confirms their identity, signs their own consent, and completes an identity and criminal database check. No one under 18 is checked.

  3. The caregiver sees one line: household check completed, with the date.

What a check cannot see

A check reads the records on one day.

No state licenses care in a child's own home, so no one checks a caregiver unless you do.

A check is not always complete, and it may not show a person's entire criminal or sex offender history.

  • It cannot see a sealed record, or conduct that was never charged.
  • In Montana and Washington, state law keeps most records older than 7 years out of any report.
  • So you meet the caregiver before you book, by phone or video, about 30 minutes.

What to ask any caregiver

  1. When was your last background check, and who ran it?

  2. Which counties did it search?

  3. Did it include federal records and the sex offender registry?

  4. When is it repeated?

Questions

How often is it repeated?

Every year. The profile shows the date of the last check.

Can I read the report?

No. You see that the check was completed and when. The report belongs to the person it is about.

What if something shows up?

The profile takes no bookings while it is reviewed. The person sees the report and can dispute it, as federal law requires.
